Paula Boudes for PureWow

Picture this: You're exhausted. You crawl into bed, ready to drift off to sleep for a restful eight (or more) hours. But your plans are quickly foiled when you start tossing and turning in a pool of sweat. You’re suddenly making frequent trips to the thermostat to tinker with the AC—all while kicking off the covers and driving your partner insane. Sounds miserable, right? Anyone who suffers from night sweats and hot flashes will recognize this scenario. Yet, if you’re a hot sleeper—and you’ve tried cooling comforters and cooling sheets that never seem to make a difference—you might benefit from investing in a cooling mattress, which uses phase-changing materials that help regulate temperature and reduce night sweats

Still, I was skeptical: Can cooling mattresses really make a difference for hot sleepers? (After all, it’s a significant splurge compared to a summer blanket and a tower fan.) So, I had our editors test top brands like Saatva, Casper and TEMPUR-Pedic—and consulted an engineering expert from the Georgia Institute of Technology—to help you choose a cooling mattress that will *actually* keep you from waking up in a puddle of sweat.

How I Tested the Best Cooling Mattresses

First, I scoured the web to uncover the cooling mattresses people were raving about. After hours of sifting through product specs and reviews, I vetted each option based on what cooling materials they used—including gel- or graphite-infused memory foam, latex or wool—how thick they were, what type of sleeper they’re best for (side, back or stomach) and whether they had a 30-plus-day return policy. I cross-referenced that with the guidance I received from materials engineer Lakshmi Prerana Panchumarti—who has studied and prototyped cooling mattresses—to ensure I was on the right track. (You’ll find more of her insights at the bottom of this story, BTW.)

From there, I narrowed the list to our top contenders and asked PureWow editors to help me test and review each one. During testing, we focused on breathability, moisture-wicking properties and heat dissipation to develop our list of the nine best cooling mattresses.

Best Cooling Mattress Overall

1. Casper Wave Hybrid Snow

What We Like

  • reduces back pain
  • QuickCool cover keeps the surface cool-to-touch
  • boxed delivery is easy to unpack

What We Don't Like

  • falls on the "plush" side for those who prefer a firmer feel

Casper

This foam and coil hybrid mattress has it all. It offers sufficient back support while still feeling super plush and cozy and has layered cooling technology that provides a six-degree cooler sleep which will help you have a deeper and better-quality rest. Plus, it includes Casper’s signature HeatDelete Bands, which are designed to remove excess body heat at a higher rate than their previous models creating cooler sleep for over 12 hours. It also has a cool-to-touch surface upon crawling into bed thanks to the QuickCool Cover top layer.

Take it from me: The temperature-regulating foam has made a noticeable impact on my night sweats. I no longer look like I came from a sauna session when I wake up, and the surface is chilled to perfection when I crawl in at night. I also love how it has a Goldilocks feel for side-sleepers. It’s soft under your shoulders so you can sink in, but it’s firmer around the hips, waist and lower back so I don’t wake up feeling achy.

  • Mattress Type: hybrid
  • Firmness: medium, medium-soft
  • Height: 12-14 inches

2. TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Breeze LuxeBreeze Mattress

What We Like

  • automatically adjusts to your body's temperature
  • available in soft, medium hybrid or firm feel
  • has a ten-year warranty

What We Don't Like

  • expensive

Tempur-pedic

There’s no doubt you’re familiar with the luxurious qualities of a Tempur-Pedic. Yet, what makes this number so unique (aside from its famous NASA-developed foam) is that it’s formulated with a TEMPUR-CM comfort layer, which was specially designed in a thermal laboratory to help manage the climate between your mattress and your covers. The foam is infused with cooling fibers and premium ventilation to enable better airflow, while the cool-to-the-touch SmartClimate cover adapts and adjusts to your body’s temperature throughout the night. Plus, it’s available in a soft, medium hybrid or firm feel—and you can choose from ProBreeze or LuxeBreeze cooling which has a five-degree difference (I had our editors compare both in this PureWow100 review).

And if you’re hesitant about the (not so inexpensive) price, PureWow executive editor Dara Katz says it’s worth every penny. “Come summer, my husband usually blasts the AC to arctic temperature while relinquishing all bedding to me…With this mattress, though, he snoozes while cocooned under our comforter like a cozy little caterpillar. (I've literally never seen him cuddled up with the bedding.) All this is to say: the cooling element works. The LuxeBreeze is marketed with a 10-degree cooler promise. And by George, does she live up to the promise. The mattress is not only miraculously cold to the touch, but it actually stays cool for as long as you’re in it.”

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: TEMPUR memory foam
  • Firmness: soft, medium hybrid, firm
  • Height: 12-13 inches
  • Trial Period: 90 days
  • Return Policy: if you don't love your new mattress after 30 days, they’ll refund your money (with additional shipping charges)

Most Comfortable Cooling Mattress

3. Saatva Classic Mattress

What We Like

  • company will replace the mattress for free if it's damaged in the first 2 years
  • good airflow system
  • offers lumbar support

What We Don't Like

  • can take a while to break in according to reviewers

Saatva

If you’re someone who’s been noticing aches and back pains that were never there before, this mattress perfectly pairs body-supporting elements with breathability. It’s made from five innovative layers of comfort with extra quilting at the top for lumbar support and responsive coils with chiropractor-approved memory foam at the bottom. Most importantly, its base is designed with a dual-coil system that allows for more airflow to help disperse body heat and prevent you from feeling slurped down into it.

“Previously, I’ve enjoyed the feel of memory foam mattresses but found them hot. The Saatva Classic has a top layer made of breathable organic cotton and three-inch pillow-top cushiness, so I’ve never overheated,” writes PureWow senior editor Dana Dickey in a PureWow100 review. As for the feel? “I’ve noticed I regularly dream more, which leads me to believe I’m sinking faster and longer into recuperative REM dream state. (Previously, this only happened when I forgot to take my anti-anxiety medication for a couple of nights.) I wake up feeling more refreshed, and I drift off to sleep faster, since I’m not tossing and turning to feel comfortable,” Dickey notes.

  • Mattress Type: hybrid innerspring
  • Firmness: plush soft, luxury firm, firm
  • Height: 11.5-14.5 inches

  • has a 365-day trial period
  • good for both adults and kids
  • made with five layers
  • affordable

What We Don't Like

Nectar

This is a memory foam favorite. It has a quilted cooling topper that is extremely breathable, and it contains five layers of different materials designed to not only cool but relieve pressure, contour your body, support, stabilize and protect against wear and tear. The gel-infused foam is also great for ensuring you don’t feel your partner tossing and turning through the night, and two pillows, a mattress protector and sheets are included with every mattress purchase (at no extra cost), so you get more bang for your buck.

In a PureWow100 review, former PureWow editor Kara Cuzzone writes: “First of all, the mattress’ five layers are designed to relieve common pressure points for a difference that I can actually feel when I lay down after a long day. Plus, its gel memory foam ensures that body heat gets distributed evenly throughout which is a total game-changer for hot sleepers like me. Those factors, combined with its medium firmness ensure that I sleep straight through the night and wake up feeling like I just got 10-plus hours of sleep in a luxe hotel bed.”

Best Cooling Hybrid Mattress

5. Cocoon By Sealy The Chill Mattress

What We Like

  • great temperature flow
  • inflates quickly
  • easy to move
  • isn't bulky

What We Don't Like

  • might be too firm for some people

Sealy

New to Cocoon by Sealy’s collection, this hybrid mattress features a premium stretch-knit cover infused with Phase Change Material that helps you fall asleep faster at a cooler temperature. Under the cooling cover, there are three other layers of memory foam, coiling and support, all making for a bed that’s neither too soft, nor too firm, according to PureWow’s Assistant Commerce Editor, Natalie LaBarbera. “I was happy to find that Cocoon by Sealy's ‘perfect blend of soft and firm’ description was pretty accurate,” writes in a review

On the cooling front, LaBarbera also says, “If you're looking for a hybrid mattress with cooling technology at a price point that won’t make you short circuit, this could definitely be the match for you…The Chill Hybrid mattress feels slightly cooler than other mattresses I've had in the past, but in my experience, how hot I get through the night depends more on which sheets and other bedding I'm using…Overall, though, my sleep quality (along with the condition of my body when I wake up) has definitely improved with this mattress.”

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: hybrid (available as a memory foam)
  • Firmness: medium
  • Height: 10-12 inches
  • Trial Period: 100 days
  • Return Policy: if you choose to return the mattress within the trial period, Sealy will refund your money, pick it up for free, and donate it to a local charity.

Most Splurge-Worthy Cooling Mattress

6. Purple RejuvenatePremier Mattress

What We Like

  • made from proprietary temperature-neutral material
  • holds more than 30 patents for cushioning technology
  • taylay latex is naturally cooling
  • pillowy Euro-top

What We Don't Like

  • expensive

Purple

Let me just say, this is hands-down the most luxurious mattress I’ve ever slept on. I tested it during a stay at Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton—and it totally lived up to the accommodation’s five-star class. What makes it completely unique from anything else on the market is that it employs Purple’s signature GelFlex® Grid Technology—which holds more than 30 patents for its cushioning technology—and takes things up a notch with eight decadent layers of cooling latex, supportive foam and responsive coils. And as a hot sleeper, I have to laud its cooling capabilities. I don’t know if it was the luxurious Sferra sheets or the mattress itself, but I stayed 100 percent sweat-free for the entire stay. (My mom tested this mattress as well, and it’s worth mentioning that—despite suffering from hot flashes—she remained cool as a cucumber.) Plus, I appreciated how the hyper-elastic gel instantly flexed to support all of my sleep positions—I’m a side- and stomach-sleeper—and the pillowy Euro-top is the personification of plush.

But back to the cooling tech: The column design of the grid, which is made from proprietary temperature-neutral material, naturally draws heat away from the body. Purple also incorporates taylay latex into the top layers of the mattress, which is proven to keep sweaty sleepers dry. The only downside, of course, is the exorbitant price… in my opinion, the technology is worth every penny if you’re serious about getting a good night’s rest.

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: Hybrid
  • Firmness: medium
  • Height: 18.5 inches
  • Trial Period: 100 nights
  • Return Policy: Purple offers a 100-night trial where they’ll issue a full refund—and have it picked up—if you don’t love it. The mattress also comes with a 10 year warranty, and they’ll replace it if anything goes wrong within the active coverage period.

Best Latex Cooling Mattress

7. Avocado Green Medium Mattress

What We Like

  • hand-tufted
  • has individually wrapped support coils that are strategically arranged
  • has a vegan option available without wool

What We Don't Like

  • cotton construction might contribute to allergies

Avocado green

ICYMI, latex is one of the best natural cooling materials on the market—and this one combines all of the benefits of latex’s open-cell structure with a medium feel that’s great for side sleepers. Basically, the mattress is known for three standout features: a hybrid Dunlop latex rubber foam innerspring, which is naturally antimicrobial, a breathable cotton cover and its wool filling, which is known to wick away moisture and be flame-retardant. “It also doesn’t seem to trap heat thanks to that aforementioned [latex and] wool, which, believe it or not, has cooling properties, despite the fact that we live in Florida, where it’s perpetually 90 degrees,” says former PureWow editor Nicole Briese in a PureWow100 review.

It’s also worth mentioning that the mattress has a sturdy five-zone coil system, which is not only designed to distribute weight evenly but also to alleviate pressure points in your hips, spine and shoulders. “From the very first night I slept on this mattress, I knew my days of hip agony were over. I put my full weight on my side and waited for the familiar stabbing to come—but none did. The medium-firm cush of the Avocado Green with a pillow top offered a just-right level of support for my aching sides,” Briese adds.

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: latex
  • Firmness: firm, medium, plush
  • Height: 11-15.5 inches
  • Trial Period: 365 days
  • Return Policy: Avocado allows you to return or exchange mattresses for a full refund within one year. They charge a $99 return fee where they’ll come pick up the mattress at your door

Best Cooling Mattress Under $200

8. Zinus Green Tea Mattress

What We Like

  • affordable
  • holds up well over time
  • easy to move
  • true-to-size

What We Don't Like

  • no trial period
  • certain sizes sell out fast

Zinus

This mattress has racked up a 4.5-star rating with more than 74,000 reviews on Amazon for good reason. First, it’s easy on your wallet and starts as low as $127 for a Twin, but more importantly, it’s made with layers of green tea-and-charcoal-infused memory foam, increasing thermoregulation. It’s also great for anyone with a unique sleeping style—from stomach sleepers who roll all over the place to side sleepers who dig their hip into the mattress—where it includes thick layers of memory foam, which are available in a 6-, 8-, 10- or 12-inch thickness. Plus, it comes with a breathable knit cover that helps to dissipate heat.

Jillian Quint, PureWow Editor-in-Chief, says: “We got this mattress for a kids' bunk bed in a small room with very little airflow. I was concerned about my hot-as-a-radiator son burning up on the top bunk, but this guy keeps him cool as a cuke, even on warm nights.” Add to that the fact that one Amazon reviewer raves, “I am blown away at how cool this mattress sleeps. My sheets get just warm enough to keep me at a comfortable room temp throughout the night, but I don't wake up drenched in sweat anymore because of the oven that would form between my sheets with my old mattress. It's probably the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on, in respect to temperature and breathability.”

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: green tea memory foam
  • Firmness: medium plush
  • Height: 6-12 inches
  • Trial Period: None
  • Return Policy: according to Amazon, you can return the mattress in its original condition for a full refund or replacement within 30 days of receipt

Best Boxed Cooling Mattress

9. Classic Brands Cool Gel 2.0 Mattress

What We Like

  • good value for price
  • plush layers of cooling gel
  • ages well over time

What We Don't Like

  • smell takes a while to go away

Classic Brands

Finally for a boxed bed that sounds too good to be true, but take the word of 47,000-plus reviewers: It’s the real deal. It features a gel memory foam layer at the top for temperature regulation you can feel at the surface, along with two extra layers of high-density, ventilated foam that offers maximum plushness with a sinkable feel. The memory foam not only conforms to your body and regulates heat with a porous, open-cell design, but the stretch knit cover also helps to wick away moisture while increasing breathability and circulation.

To that end, this was my first ‘adult’ mattress after I graduated college, and I definitely noticed a cooling difference in my shoebox NYC apartment. While the gel-infused foam offers maximum ventilation (aka sweat-free nights), its high-density foam layer conforms to your body and relieves pressure points. Not only did it have the plush, sink-into-me effect I was looking for, but it does exactly what it says: Keeps me cool all night long. That said, it’s also worth mentioning that this mattress might be prone to sinking over time (I had to flip it twice in the two years I slept on it). However, for the price—coupled with the fact that it comes with two cooling pillows—I personally didn’t mind the extra legwork.

Fast Facts

  • Mattress Type: gel memory foam
  • Firmness: ultra-plush, plus, medium, medium-plush, medium-firm
  • Height: 8-14 inches
  • Trial Period: 100 days
  • Return Policy: according to Amazon, you can return the mattress in its original condition for a full refund or replacement within 100 days of receipt. You may receive a partial or no refund on used, damaged or materially different returns.

How Does Cooling Mattress Technology Work?

Meet The Expert

Lakshmi Prerana Panchumarti graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2022 with a BS in Material Science and Engineering, and she’s currently a materials science engineer at Boeing. In college, she (and five engineering students) designed a capstone project, sponsored by Serta Simmons Bedding, to develop a cooling mattress that would reduce sweat and heat while improving airflow. Her team received the top prize, where they effectively prototyped a mattress with cooling capabilities, backed by rigorous lab testing.

What to Look For in a Cooling Mattress

  • Airflow From The Surface: First and foremost, it's important to understand how different mattresses are made—and that most of the cooling effects come from the top comfort layer of the mattress. According to Panchumarti, innerspring mattresses are the coolest because there’s enough space between the coils for air to flow freely. Contrastingly, foam mattresses—especially memory foam—tend to be the hottest (they trap heat and don’t let air pass through). “The challenge for the bedding industry is to make foam and hybrid mattresses more breathable,” she explains. While memory foam is ultra-supportive, it acts like an insulator, keeping heat in. To make a memory foam mattress cool, however, you need to “infuse the foam with materials like graphite, which helps spread heat out and away from your body, keeping you cooler longer.”
  • Moisture-Wicking Fabrics: If you’re someone who suffers from night sweats, it’s often due to your mattress heating up to your body temperature (and trapping humidity between you and the bed). This makes the air under the sheets feel hot, and in turn, sticky from sweat. “Memory foam mattresses compress and become dense, which restricts airflow. This lack of airflow makes it harder for heat and moisture to escape.” Per Panchumarti, however, “using fabrics that wick moisture away from your body is key.” Tencel fabric, more specifically, is great for this. It’s a bamboo-derived fiber that was tested against cotton and rayon blends in her study—and showed much better performance in moisture-wicking and drying time. “Tencel performed significantly better than cotton [and rayon] at mitigating humidity… it dried much faster, meaning less humidity buildup, which helps [reduce sweating].” Panchumarti and her team also found that tencel retained less moisture compared to rayon and cotton, which means it can effectively wick sweat away from the skin.
  • Heat-Dissipating Materials: Keeping your body cool while you sleep is all about how well your mattress can absorb and dissipate heat. In Panchumarti’s study, “latex showed the best heat absorption. This means it can pull heat away from your body effectively, providing a cooler sleep surface.” It’s also worth mentioning that foam mattresses infused with graphite showed higher heat absorption. (Though, latex is still better at dissipating heat than graphite foam). Graphite-infused memory foam outperformed traditional foams, where it spreads heat away from your body much faster than foam alone.
  • Firmness: Some brands offer a one-size-fits-all firmness level, while others feature a numbered scale or a straightforward soft, medium and firm option. Typically, a medium-soft firmness feel is considered the most universally comfortable option—but remember; firmness is highly subjective (what feels rock solid to you might feel like a fluffy cloud to someone else).
  • Height: While standard mattresses tend to fall between 8 and 14 inches high (according to experts at Amerisleep), you want to make sure you choose a thickness that’ll accommodate your sleeping style. A plush, contoured foam might be best for side sleepers, but a 2021 review suggests that a medium-firm feel can help reduce lower back pain. Plus, a thicker mattress can provide more support, especially for heavyweight people, and can help alleviate pressure point pain on the hips and shoulders. The only downside to a denser mattress is that the thicker they are, the hotter they can feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Types of Mattresses Are Best for Cooling?

While the cooling component of a mattress mainly has to do with its materials—wool, cotton, gel beads, etc.—you want to be sure you’re looking for three specific types: innerspring, hybrid and latex foam. First, innerspring mattresses are the best option for breathability because they use layers of reactive springs at the base with ventilated cushioning on top. The springs prevent heat from seeping in while the surface cushion is typically constructed with lightweight cotton (which will feel even cooler when paired with a set of percale sheets).

Then, hybrid mattresses are intentionally designed with multiple support systems to suit everyone’s sleep preferences. They use a combination of foam, gel and innerspring coils—and while the coils resist heat absorption at the base, you want to make sure you’re looking for open-cell foams at the top that promote airflow. Finally, latex foam mattresses use naturally cooling latex, which is a hypoallergenic material that mimics the bouncy feel of an innerspring. Not only does it work overtime to release heat at the surface (thanks to the little perforations in its design), but it’s a great option for anyone who’s prone to heat rashes or skin sensitives.

What Level of Firmness Should My Mattress Be?

According to Dr. Tim Bertelsman, award-winning chiropractor and founder of ChiroUp: “Back and stomach sleepers typically prefer a firmer mattress, while the best type of mattress for side-sleepers may be one with a little more cushioning.” He also adds: “Research and expert opinions suggest that a soft mattress is not ideal. A medium-to-firm mattress is probably the optimal starting point; however, individual factors are the ultimate guide to defining what type of mattress is best for back pain and other musculoskeletal conditions.” So, while some brands offer a one-size-fits-all firmness level, most feature a numbered scale from one to ten: level one is the softest, and ten tends to be hard as a rock. (Read more about how to choose the right number for your sleep style here.)

How Long Do Cooling Mattresses Last?

In a ChiroUp survey, nearly nine out of ten chiropractors recommended that you should replace your mattress—whether it’s cooling or not—within a five- to ten-year cycle. To that end, Dr. Bertelsman says to do a mattress stick test if you need help determining whether your mattress needs replacing: “A dip in the mattress means support is fading. Like athletic shoes, the support is likely inadequate if you notice a visible breakdown…while most mattresses should be replaced every five to ten years, patient sleep position, weight and mattress construction all play a role. (Springs and foam may wear out quicker, while air doesn’t break down as easily.)”
