Ribbon Highlights Are the New Balayage and We're Here for It

We swore nothing would change our unwavering dedication to a hair trend as lovely and low maintenance as a good balayage. That is, until this very moment, when ribbon highlights graced our Instagram feed.

Much like balayage itself, ribbon highlights add depth and movement to hair in a softer, more natural way than regular old foil highlights. But unlike balayage, the color isn’t concentrated at the ends of hair.

The method behind this new technique is to start with a solid base (say, brunette) and weave one contrasting, lighter hue throughout in ribbon-like pieces. The end result is almost balayage but with a bigger contrast that’s spread more evenly throughout.

The only thing that makes this color even better? Big, loose waves. Use a large barrel curling iron, wand or even hot rollers to achieve optimal beach babe status—just in time for summer.
