Is Julie Andrews Open to Coming Back for ‘Princess Diaries 3’?

Queen Clarisse Renaldi has spoken: Julie Andrews, who played the iconic character in the Princess Diaries franchise, has finally given her answer on appearing in the third installment.

Last month, Disney confirmed that Princess Diaries 3 is in the early stages of production. The third movie will continue the story of the beloved franchise and won’t serve as a reboot.

In a new interview with Access Hollywood, the 87-year-old actress shared that she just doesn’t see herself returning for Princess Diaries 3. “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” she told the outlet.

She continued, “It was talked about very shortly after two came out, [the sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement] but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing it, I doubt that now.” (Can you excuse us for a moment…)

Andrews’s decision to not appear in The Princess Diaries 3 may come as a surprise to some fans. Back in 2019, actress Anne Hathaway revealed on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that she was open to coming back for the sequel. She also confirmed that Andrews was already on board for the project at the time.

“I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen,” she said on the show.

Based on the novel written by Meg Cabot, The Princess Diaries first premiered in 2001 and starred Hathaway (Mia Thermopolis), Andrews (Queen Clarisse Renaldi), Héctor Elizondo (Joe), Heather Matarazzo (Lilly Moscovitz) and Mandy Moore (Lana Thomas). The movie was a commercial success and was followed by the sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).

Princess Diaries 3 won’t be the same without you, Julie.
