Duchess Sophie has become the latest royal family member to sport a friendship bracelet during her surprise appearance at the 2024 Olympic Paris Games

Earlier this week, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 59, attended a Track Cycling competition between Team GB and New Zealand. Duchess Sophie was photographed wearing an ERDEM ‘Roisin’ Floral-Print Midi Dress in the color purple.

As she cheered for Great Britain on the sidelines, we (and other eagle-eyed royal fans) couldn’t help but notice the royal duchess was wearing an accessory on her wrist; a decorative piece that, as of late, has become the latest fashion trend within the British royal family: a friendship bracelet.

The first time we noticed Princess Charlotte donning the viral accessory on her wrist was in her 9th birthday portrait, which was shared on Instagram back in May. Then, the young princess was spotted yet again rocking a friendship bracelet when she attended the last day of Wimbledon with her mom, Kate Middleton, in July.

Even Prince George sported a friendship bracelet on two separate occasions: when he attended the Euro 2024 England-Spain match with his dad, Prince William, and when he posed for his 11th birthday portrait. Oh, and did we mention King Charles was photographed wearing a neon bracelet during his visit to Guernsey?

At first, we thought the friendship bracelets were somehow tied to Taylor Swift (after all, the royals are big fans of the “Cardigan” singer). PureWow’s Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint believes the royal fashion trend is not connected to the Grammy-award-winning singer at all.

In a recent theory piece, she wrote, “Clearly, I don’t know the origin story. But I do know that, for my daughter, it helps her feel connected to us even when we’re apart. It helped her to wear her bracelet on her first day of camp and it helped her to know I had mine when I had a night out a few days later. Perhaps Charlotte feels the same way; after all, she and her mother were at Wimbledon while her brother and dad were in Germany for the EURO tournament. Maybe she missed them? Or perhaps it’s just a silly thing they do to get through a tough time in their lives.”

Either way, we’re loving this royal+friendship bracelet trend.
